I'm sorry for being so late.
I'm sorry I couldn't tell you sooner,
but I didn't want to do or say
something that I’d later hate.

You said a few simple words
and I completely shut down.
I didn't know what to say
until it was time to leave town.

I blamed my defense mechanism,
but I know it was my own fault.
I couldn't bring myself
to just say the words and tell him.

I thought that my heart
couldn't handle a rejection,
but now we're too far apart
to even make a connection.

And now my heart is broken.
"I can't get you off my mind,"
the words I could've spoken
now remain unheard by all mankind.
